This painting is a study for a work in progress, a much larger canvas 70 x 120 inches.
The seascape is an enduring semi-figurative theme in Röhe’s work. This study for a large ongoing canvas ‘The Great Seascape IV’ continues that theme in a very upbeat way. Against a sunny and sky blue background drenched in rain, swirls of magenta mingle with yellow and spring green in luscious sweeps of paint. Heavily worked areas of impasto complement smooth expanses to evoke the same sense of sublime depth. As often seen in his work, mechanical elements, in this case in the form of uniform dots bisect this chaos to hint at objects and interruptions to the natural scene.
